LOCK N BOLT LOCKSMITH

SECURITY TIPS

Security for our home, office,  car, and workplace  is a very important precaution against theft, espionage and other dangers.  It is all around us, but there are a number of steps that you can carry out to safeguard your property and possessions.

At home -  leave your keys in a safe place so you are the only one know were they are at all times.   I have seen people with there keys on a hook next to the front door,  keys still left in doors, keys in a glass tray near the front door.   If you have sales people at home trying to make a sale of some sort ask for there ID before entering the home.   Firstly,  the key that is left in the door is a good target for the elderly.   That key on the hook at the front door can easily be placed   in some ones pocket,  if you have an emergency and the deadbolt is on,  in an emergency you cannot think straight, you forgot were the key is,    Water meters, some  turn the water meter off and come and inspect it later to see if there is water being used, if not being used for a while then they know there is know body home.   Some water meters have a special tap so the home owner can place a padlock on it so it cannot be tampered with.  front doors with glass either side of it may make your home looking great but it can be broken have a security door company build you some costume made grills for them as there are so many styles to choose from.

Home  security doors should not be locked by key from the inside unless you have small children who can reach the snib to unlock it, however it is wise to unlock it by the key at night, then use the key again during the day.  If you cannot find the key you cannot escape in an emergency as the door itself has a turn lever to lock the outer handle.  There are security doors that should not be sold as security doors as the frame itself is very poorly made from week aluminium and has only one look in the  center.   Bottom and top of doors are very vulnerable to be bent out and opened, be careful of this type of door,  don't get me wrong there are good aluminium security doors with three locking positions that are higher up on the scale of security.  Aluminium doors have 4 weak points that are at the corners as they are not welded they are assembled with an aluminium or metal insert at each corner.   As the all metal security doors they are welded in each corner and they are tough.   Most aluminium door sales people will tell you metal doors will rust,   how often when it rains does water come in through you front door, there is a roof over it.   As this type of door can get  expensive depending on the lock that is installed but if you want security this is the door for you.

At your office -  if you have a desk with draws and a filing cabinet today most large organization office area's have open plan cubical's so keep them locked when you go for lunch or planning a day off or on annual leave as into days life large company's and even small company's have a large staff turnover of contract staff.   If your desk has no lock ask your manager for a lock to be installed.   Some desks have a locking system that lock all draws at once, if you have three draws then place three locks on all draws, if you need just one place it on the top draw.   Most of the time the bottom draw is the largest one, you  cannot place one here as you can remove the upper draw and remove the content from the bottom one this is why you need to place one on all of them, all you need is a simple push lock on the side of the draw as they are out of site.

Fire exit doors These doors have signs above them so they are visable  when an emergency arrive the door itself should be  one action egress meaning there should be only a single lock with a lever action.   NO PADLOCKS, NO SLIDING BOLTS, the door should be clear at all times

Cars-  Theft from valuables in your car are ripe for the taking,  if you have valuables in your car, place them in the boot and  try not to park your car in a dark place,  and double check to see if you have  lock the car when you leave or retire for the day.

Work place -  most company's supply lockers for your items, if you have no key or the lock is broken ask your supervisor or manager to organize a keys for you or fix the lock.

Locks are not always reliable and they can be broken and damaged, with cabinets, lockers, robe's, desk's,  locks are only there to keep the honest thief out, if they want to get in they will break it.

A good option would be to purchase a quality safe for your valuables and bolted to a wall or floor and invest in a quality alarm system.
